How to read a cement mill test certificate

Every load we ship comes with a mill test certificate (MTC). Here's what each line on it means — and how to verify you're getting the spec you're paying for.

What an MTC is

A lab report for the exact cement you received.

A mill test certificate is a document — issued for a specific production run — that reports the chemical and physical test results for that cement against a standard like ASTM C150-24 or AASHTO M85-24. It's how you prove, on paper, that the material meets the spec your project or plant requires.

If a supplier can't hand you an MTC, you're buying on trust alone. We include one with every shipment — from a single super sack to a full container.

The physical tests

The numbers most specs are written against.

Blaine fineness (m²/kg)
Surface area per unit mass. Finer cement (higher Blaine) hydrates faster and typically develops early strength quicker, at the cost of more water demand and heat.
Compressive strength (MPa / psi)
Measured on mortar cubes at 3, 7 and 28 days. The 28-day figure is the headline number most specs are written against.
Autoclave expansion (%)
A soundness test for free lime and magnesia. Low expansion means the cement won't expand and crack after it sets. ASTM C150 caps this tightly.
SO₃ — sulfate (%)
Gypsum added to control set time. Too little flash-sets; too much can cause expansion. The MTC shows it's within the standard's window.
LOI — loss on ignition (%)
Weight lost when the sample is heated. A proxy for moisture and weathering — lower is fresher, better-stored cement.
Clinker chemistry

C3S, C2S, C3A, C4AF — the four phases explained.

The Bogue compounds are the four main crystalline phases in Portland clinker. Their proportions decide how the cement sets, gains strength, and resists sulfates.

C3SAlite — tricalcium silicate

The main strength driver. Hydrates quickly and controls early set and 1–28 day strength. Most of a Type I/II cement is C3S.

C2SBelite — dicalcium silicate

Hydrates slowly and builds later-age strength (28 days and beyond). Contributes to long-term durability with lower heat.

C3ATricalcium aluminate

Reacts fast and releases a lot of heat. Keeping C3A low is what gives Type II its moderate sulfate resistance — a key reason to check this line.

C4AFTetracalcium aluminoferrite

Contributes little strength but gives gray cement its color and lowers the clinkering temperature. Higher C4AF, darker cement.

Type I vs Type II in one line: Type I is general-purpose; Type II caps C3A (and heat) for moderate sulfate resistance. A Type I/II cement is manufactured to satisfy both — which is why it's the versatile default for most work.
